Message from Chief Larkin - Large Community Gatherings

Dear residents,

During the past week, the Waterloo Regional Police Service has responded to three separate incidents where individuals have gathered in large groups throughout the University District. One of these gatherings had an estimated 1,000 people in attendance.

This is unacceptable. It is irresponsible. It is extremely disappointing. Moreover, it is unlawful.

As we continue through a global pandemic, large gatherings are prohibited. They are prohibited for a reason. To openly defy public health guidelines that have been put in place to keep our community safe is simply inexcusable.

This behavior puts an unreasonable strain on the WRPS and our emergency service partners and puts our already overburdened health care system at risk.

This is not the Waterloo Region we know – one that has shown support, compassion and understanding throughout the entire pandemic.  We must continue to work collectively for a safer Waterloo Region.

We understand the desire to see friends, to socialize, to get back to “normal,” although we condemn these selfish acts that put others at risk.

We will be working with our post-secondary institutions and community partners to address your concerns while we enhance police visibility and increase enforcement in the University District to ensure the safety and security of all community members.

We are hopeful the community will help by not attending large gatherings and by abiding by public health guidelines.

This is about respect – for yourself, for your friends and family, and for your community.
