Police Arrest Impaired Driver Following Traffic Stop Using ALPR in Kitchener

Waterloo Regional Police have charged a male with impaired driving following a proactive traffic stop in Kitchener.

On May 11, 2025, at approximately 4:20 a.m., officers received an alert while using the automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) technology, for a vehicle travelling in the area of Victoria Street North and St Leger Street with unattached plates. The driver of the vehicle fled from officers while disobeying several red lights and due to safety concerns, officers did not initiate a pursuit.  

At approximately 5:25 a.m., officers located the same vehicle travelling on Victoria Street North near Weber Street East and initiated a pursuit, which was then terminated due to public safety concerns.

At approximately 5:35 a.m., officers located the unoccupied suspect vehicle parked in the area of Queen Street North. Officers located the two vehicle occupants nearby and arrested them.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 27-year-old Wilmot male was charged with:

  • Flight from police officer
  • Dangerous operation
  • Operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle

The passenger, a 27-year-old Cambridge female was charged with:

  • Possession of suspected crack cocaine
  • Possession of suspected fentanyl
  • Assault peace officer
  • Being intoxicated in a public place
