The Waterloo Regional Police Service Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative is a paid personal, professional, and community development opportunity for Waterloo Region youth aged 15-18. It has been running since 2019 in partnership with Ontario's Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services. During July and August, the program runs weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WRPS YIP Members' Mission Statement

- Navigate their future goals through personal and professional growth.
- Discover community policing and policing beyond the uniform.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age 15-18 who are reflective of the community's cultural diversity.
- Eligible to work in Canada.
- Must reside in the Waterloo Region.
- Be seeking work experience/job skills training.
- Someone who benefits from the support of a mentor.
- Able to complete the recruitment/background process.
- Looking for mentorship relationships
- They intend to return to school in September or are already enrolled.
- They have not been hired in a leadership, team lead, or coordinator role for the YIP program.
What Participants Can Expect
- Standard First Aid and CPR training.
- Obtain a Safe Food Handling Certificate.
- Obtain a Toastmasters Certificate.
- Build their resume, interviewing skills, financial literacy and more.
- Learn more about their local police service and community partners.
