Human trafficking is the exploitation, manipulation, or control of a person by violence or threats of violence to provide forced labour or sexual service. It is the second largest criminal industry in the world, leaving victims with physical, mental, and emotional scars. 

 

To help identify victims, know the signs. Victims may: 

 

  • Be unable to present identity documents.
  • Have a lack of access to their own money and resources.
  • Only be allowed outside when accompanied.
  • Be unable to make decisions without permission.
  • Be branded (i.e., tattoos) with the trafficker’s name.
  • Have no cell phone.
  • Exhibit signs of chronic fear or guilt.
  • Have bruises or other signs of physical abuse. 

If you believe you have witnessed human trafficking, the follow details may assist police in investigations: 

 

  • Details/descriptions of those involved.
  • Location.
  • Transport used.
  • Documents used.
  • Method of recruitment and manipulation.
