Halloween is fun and exciting for children and families, but safety should always come first. Whether you're trick-or-treating, handing out candy, or behind the wheel, these helpful tips will ensure a safe and enjoyable night for everyone. From costume safety and road awareness to checking candy and setting curfews, a little planning goes a long way in keeping Halloween night spooky—but safe!

Parents/guardians

  • Know the route your child is taking and map it out with them ahead of time.
  • Ensure a trusted group or adult accompanies your child.
  • Set a time for your child to come home.
  • Explain the difference between tricks and vandalism.
  • Ensure your child’s costume allows them to be mobile and see clearly.
  • Check your child’s candy when they return home; discard any candy that has been removed from its original packaging or appears to be tampered with.

Children and youth

  • Never enter anyone’s home or vehicle.
  • Look all ways before crossing the street and help younger children to cross safely.
  • Wear reflective or bright-coloured material.
  • If you are wearing a mask, remove it from your face while walking.
  • Avoid eating candy until a parent or guardian has checked it.
  • Ensure you stay within a safe distance of the parent/guardian or group you are walking with.
  • Inform and update your parents/guardians of your plans for older youth.

Motorists

  • Stop fully at signs and crosswalks.
  • Adhere to posted speed limits.
  • Be alert and watch for children crossing at non-designated locations, driveways, and parked vehicle areas.
  • Drive sober.
