Police Investigating Distraction Thefts Targeting Elderly Community Members
The Waterloo Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate ongoing distraction thefts that have been reported throughout the Region, with elderly community members being specifically targeted.
In these incidents, suspects have approached victims while in a vehicle and offered what appears to be a gift in the form of jewelry. The items are later determined to be fake gold. During the interaction, suspects place the imitation jewelry on the victim while simultaneously removing the victim’s real jewelry without their knowledge.
There are believed to be multiple suspects involved, utilizing different vehicles across the Region. Victims often do not realize their jewelry has been stolen until after the suspects have left the area.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service is urging residents to share this information with elderly family members, friends, and neighbors. Community awareness is a critical step in preventing further victimization.
Anyone who observes suspicious behaviour or has information related to these incidents is encouraged to contact police at 519-570-9777. To provide information anonymously, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online at www.waterloocrimestoppers.com.
