The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) is launching a Retail Crime Safety Blitz this September to address the rise in significant retail thefts across Waterloo Region.

As part of this initiative, officers will conduct targeted enforcement in identified problem areas, with locations determined by crime analysis and community needs. A range of policing strategies will be used to prevent and deter retail theft, including organized retail crime.

Between 2023 and 2024, Waterloo Region experienced a 36 per cent increase in retail thefts, with 4,276 incidents reported. These thefts not only drive up costs for consumers but also affect feelings of community safety. Locally, WRPS continues to investigate thefts involving items such as perfumes, power tools, cell phones, electronics, and other high-value items.

“Through this safety blitz, we are committed to working with our retail partners to prevent and deter theft, hold offenders accountable, and ensure that Waterloo Region remains a safe place to live, work, and shop,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police.

Throughout the month, residents can expect to see an increased police presence at various retail locations. The timing and locations will vary to ensure effective enforcement and community safety.

In addition, WRPS is working in conjunction with the Retail Council of Canada - National Retail Crime Taskforce (RCC) and other retail partners to further help curb retail and organized crime.
