Waterloo Regional Police Remind Residents About Safe Use of Fireworks

Posted on: Monday June 23
Location: Waterloo Region

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is reminding community members to celebrate safely this Canada Day long weekend and to review the rules around the use of personal fireworks.

Local bylaws prohibit the use of fireworks on public property, including parks, roads, and sidewalks. Fireworks are only permitted on private property with the property owner's consent.

Each municipality within Waterloo Region has its own bylaws that outline when, where, and how personal fireworks can be used, along with any age restrictions. Failure to follow these bylaws can result in fines of up to $1,000, depending on the municipality. For full details, residents are encouraged to visit their local municipal website for more information.

Police have the authority to enforce the safe use of fireworks, and individuals may face criminal charges if they set off fireworks in a manner that is unsafe or reckless.

Residents are reminded to contact their city or township’s bylaw office for non-criminal matters related to fireworks.

If you witness unsafe or dangerous activity, please contact police immediately by calling 9-1-1.
