The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) is proud to announce the launch of Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), marking a significant milestone in the Service’s commitment to strengthening public safety and emergency response across Waterloo Region.

NG9-1-1 is a multi-stage initiative designed to modernize the traditional 9-1-1 system with advanced digital technology. While the process for calling 9-1-1 remains unchanged, the new system provides critical improvements, including:

  • Faster and more accurate caller location and phone number information
  • Enhanced reliability and cybersecurity
  • Expanded backup capabilities in the event of a system failure
  • Future ability to support real-time text messaging and other digital technologies

WRPS is proud to be one of the first Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), or 9-1-1 call centres, in Ontario, and the 25th out of 226 across Canada, to implement NG9-1-1 technology.

“NG9-1-1 represents more than just a project,” said WRPS Chief Mark Crowell. “It signifies a multi-phase modernization of an entire industry, one that has effectively operated for more than 30 years. This advancement ensures that we continue to evolve with the needs of the community while strengthening our ability to keep residents safe.”

In 2024, the WRPS received 366,905 calls for service.

"Upgrading Ontario’s public safety communications will be a game changer,” said Hon. Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General of Ontario. “NG9-1-1gives first responders real-time, life-saving information, which means a faster, more effective emergency response. Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government will always have the backs of those who protect our province. That’s why we are proud to provide funding to Waterloo Region for this new technology, which will mean more calls will be answered, more lives will be saved, and people across the Region can count on emergency services when it matters most."

The Ontario government has provided more than $3.8 million since 2022 to support WRPS’ transition to NG9-1-1.

This system upgrade was carried out in collaboration with Solacom, the supplier of the NG9-1-1 system, and Bell, the official network provider, which provided technical support throughout the integration.
