WRPS Remind Residents About Safe Use of Fireworks
he Waterloo Regional Police Service is encouraging members of the community to practice safety and to familiarize themselves with the rules surrounding the use of fireworks.
Local bylaws prevent the use of fireworks outside private property, meaning members of the community cannot set off fireworks on public property or public roads.
Each municipality has their own bylaws that outline if and when the use of personal fireworks is permitted and age restrictions. If these bylaws aren’t followed, users could face a fine of up to $400, depending on the municipality. For full details around the use of personal fireworks, visit your local municipality website.
Police have the authority to enforce the safe use of fireworks, and individuals can be criminally charged if they choose to set off fireworks in an unsafe manner.
Members of the public are reminded to contact your city or township’s bylaw office for issues that are not criminal in nature.
Anyone who witnesses an unsafe or dangerous condition should contact police immediately at 9-1-1.
