Cybercrime Investigation

Waterloo Regional Police are seeking a wanted male in connection to a series of cyberattacks against a Kitchener-based technology company.

In August 2023, WRPS’ Cybercrime Unit began investigating a series of cyberattacks against a Kitchener technology company.

Investigators determined that between May and August 2023, the company’s networks were illegally accessed, resulting in the theft of confidential data. The attacker then made multiple ransom demands in an unsuccessful attempt to extort money from the company.

The attacks had a significant impact on the company and its clients, resulting in damages that are estimated to be millions of dollars.

WRPS Cybercrime Unit investigators have identified Wen-Lih Chuang, 33, a Taiwanese National, as the suspect in the cyberattacks, and a warrant for Mr. Chuang’s arrest has been issued for the offences of Unauthorized Use of a Computer, Mischief to Data, Extortion, and Disobeying a Court Order.
