UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE:

The Waterloo Regional Police Service’s General Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate after determining a fraud involving suspects posing as police officers in Kitchener is connected to a prior fraud targeting the same victims.

On May 26, 2026, at approximately 1:50 p.m., police responded to a report of a fraud at a residence in the area of Arrowhead Crescent. Two suspects posed as police officers investigating a previously reported fraud to gain entry to a residence. The suspects then stole cash from the victims and fled the area in a dark blue Volkswagen Atlas.

Investigators have since determined the incident is linked to a reported roofing scam that occurred earlier in the month at the same residence.

On May 12, 2026, police were contacted by a victim who reported being defrauded by individuals operating under the name “The Contract Doctor.” The suspects attended the residence on May 9 and May 11, 2026, claiming the roof required urgent repairs and warning of potential damage, including mould concerns.

Over the course of these interactions, the victims were persuaded to pay a significant amount of cash for repairs. The suspects removed sections of roofing material and left the area covered with a tarp, advising they would return to complete the work. The suspects did not return, and further attempts to contact them were unsuccessful.

Investigators believe two different suspects then attended the residence on May 26, 2026, posing as out-of-region police officers investigating fraud. The suspects used this pretext to gain entry to the home and convince the victims to produce cash, which was then taken before the suspects fled.

Police are working to identify individuals involved in both incidents.

Images of a vehicle and company logo connected to the roofing scam are being released.

Members of the public are reminded:

• Police officers will never request cash or valuables for investigative purposes.
• Be cautious of unsolicited contractors who claim urgent repairs are required.
• Avoid making large cash payments, especially when pressured or asked to keep transactions confidential.
• Verify businesses independently and be cautious of newly established companies or online profiles.
• Do not allow anyone into your home until their identity has been confirmed.

Waterloo Regional Police are continuing to investigate a robbery in Kitchener where suspects posed as out-of-region police officers to gain entry to a residence.

On May 26, 2026, at approximately 1:50 p.m., police received a report of a robbery at a residence in the area of Arrowhead Crescent.

Investigators learned that two unknown males attended the residence and claimed to be police officers who were investigating a previous report of fraud involving the victims. 

The suspects advised they had arrested individuals connected to the prior fraud and requested information about cash and valuables inside the home.

The victims asked the males for identification. The suspects advised they were plainclothes officers from the Greater Toronto Area and produced ID cards worn on chains. They did not provide clear police identification, which will include a photo, name, rank, and police service.

As part of the interaction, the suspects instructed the victims to retrieve cash from inside the home, claiming it needed to be documented for investigative purposes. When funds were produced, one of the suspects grabbed the money, and both males fled the residence and entered a waiting vehicle.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect One:

• White or tan male
• Medium build
• Approximately six feet tall
• Dark hair
• Wearing a navy blue T-shirt, dark beige khaki pants, brown shoes, and a navy blue baseball cap with a logo

Suspect Two:

• Tan or white male
• Medium build, smaller than suspect one
• Approximately six feet tall
• Wearing a navy blue T-shirt, dark beige khaki pants, brown slip-on shoes, and a navy blue baseball cap with a logo

A third individual remained in the driver’s seat of the suspect vehicle, described as a dark blue Volkswagen Atlas with tinted rear windows.

Members of the public are reminded that police officers will never request cash, valuables, or financial assets for safekeeping, evidence collection, or investigative purposes.

In person:

• Do not allow anyone into your home until their identity has been verified. 
• Ask to see both a badge and warrant card. Genuine police identification will include a photo, name, rank, and police service. 
• Take time to examine the identification carefully. 
• If you are unsure, close the door and call Waterloo Regional Police to confirm. 
• If the person is legitimate, they will understand and allow you to verify their identity.

Additional Tips

• Be cautious of anyone requesting secrecy, urgency, or immediate compliance.
• Be suspicious of individuals who ask about money, safes, or valuables.
• If you feel threatened or unsafe, call 9-1-1.

Police officers, including those in plainclothes, will clearly identify themselves and will never discourage you from verifying their identity.

Waterloo Regional Police are continuing to investigate a robbery at a residence in Kitchener.

On May 26, 2026, at approximately 1:50 p.m., police received a report of a robbery in the area of Arrowhead Crescent.

The investigation determined that two unknown males attended a residence posing as police officers, claiming they were investigating a fraud. The males pressured the victims into handing over a large sum of money, then left the home and fled in an awaiting dark blue Volkswagen Atlas.

The two suspects who attended the residence were described as white males, medium build, wearing a navy-blue t-shirt, beige khaki pants and navy-blue baseball caps.

The investigation is ongoing.

Investigators are requesting that residents in the area of Arrowhead Crescent check their home security cameras between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on May 26, 2026, for any suspicious persons or vehicles.
