Waterloo Regional Police are reminding residents to be vigilant after receiving reports of distraction theft scams targeting individuals in Waterloo Region.

On October 25, 2026, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a resident working outside a home in the area of Snyders Road East in Wilmot Township was approached by a male in a white sport utility vehicle.

The male claimed he was experiencing vehicle trouble and asked for money while attempting to sell a gold ring. The resident declined, and the vehicle left the area. The vehicle was later observed approaching other people nearby.

Police are investigating and believe the incident is consistent with distraction theft and fraud schemes that have recently been reported in Waterloo Region and other jurisdictions.

These incidents often involve suspects approaching residents under the guise of needing assistance, asking for directions, offering gifts, selling jewellery, or requesting help with an urgent situation. In some cases, suspects attempt to gain trust through physical contact, such as a handshake or embrace, before stealing jewellery or other valuables.

Waterloo Regional Police are reminding residents to:

  • Be cautious when approached by strangers seeking money or assistance.
  • Maintain a safe distance during unsolicited interactions.
  • Avoid accepting gifts, jewellery, or other items from people you do not know.
  • Never feel obligated to engage in a conversation or transaction.
  • Consider keeping valuable jewellery and personal items out of plain view when working outdoors or walking in the community.
  • Report suspicious people or vehicles to police immediately.

Investigators are particularly encouraging seniors and their family members to discuss these scams and share prevention information with friends, neighbours, and loved ones.

The investigation remains ongoing.
