Waterloo Regional Police Service Supports Canada Road Safety Week 2025

Posted on: Wednesday May 14
Location: Waterloo Region

From May 13 to 19, 2025, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) is proud to participate in Canada Road Safety Week. This annual national campaign aims to make Canada's roads the safest in the world by promoting safe driving practices and reducing road fatalities and injuries.

The continuing 2025 theme, "Road Safety — Every Road. Every Day. Everyone.", underscores the shared responsibility of all road users to prioritize safety. The campaign focuses on eliminating high-risk driving behaviours, including:

  • Impaired driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding and aggressive driving
  • Driving without a seatbelt

These behaviours, often called the "Fatal Four," significantly contribute to serious collisions on our roads. In 2024, Waterloo Region experienced 15 fatal collisions resulting in 17 deaths—a 50% increase from the previous year. Notably, 40% of these incidents involved one or more Fatal Four offences.

"We are committed to improving safety for all road users in Waterloo Region," said Staff Sergeant Scott Griffiths of WRPS' Traffic Services Unit. "But we can't do it alone. Making our roads safer is a community effort."

During Canada Road Safety Week, WRPS officers will increase enforcement efforts, including Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs and Selective Traffic Enforcement Programs (STEP) in areas identified through data analysis and community feedback. These initiatives aim to deter unsafe driving behaviours and promote compliance with traffic laws.

WRPS encourages all drivers to:

  • Slow down
  • Drive sober
  • Put down the phone
  • Always wear a seatbelt

By adopting these safe driving habits, we can work together to ensure that every journey ends with a safe arrival.

Canada Road Safety Week is an enforcement-driven initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures to save lives and reduce injuries on Canadian roads. This initiative is part of Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2025, which aims to make Canada's roads the safest in the world.
