Between May 13, 2025, and May 19, 2025, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) participated in Canada Road Safety Week, an annual national campaign to promote safe driving practices and reduce road fatalities and injuries.

The continuing 2025 theme, "Road Safety — Every Road. Every Day. Everyone.", underscored the shared responsibility of all road users to prioritize safety and the importance of adopting safe driving habits. The campaign resulted in 214 charges being laid, including:

  • 88 Speeding charges
  • 30 Disobey Sign
  • 20 Impaired Operation-related charges
  • 14 Careless Driving
  • 12 Distracted Driving charges
  • 7 Stunt Driving
  • 6 Seatbelt charges
  • 4 Dangerous Driving charges
  • 33 other charges, including Criminal Code offences, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act charges, Liquor Licence Act charges, and other Highway Traffic Act offences.

“The number of charges laid during Canada Road Safety Week highlights the ongoing need for awareness, education, and enforcement,” said Staff Sergeant Scott Griffiths of the WRPS Traffic Services Unit. “These numbers are more than statistics – they represent real risks on our roads. Every driver has a role to play in preventing collisions. By choosing to drive sober, slow down, stay focused, and buckle up, we can all contribute to safer roads in Waterloo Region.”

Canada Road Safety Week is an enforcement-driven initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures to save lives and reduce injuries on Canadian roads. This initiative is part of Canada's Road Safety Strategy 2025, which aims to make Canada's roads the safest in the world.
