Waterloo Regional Police Service to Host Information Sessions About the Use of CCTV and ALPR Technology

Posted on: Thursday October 23
Location: Waterloo Region

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) invites community residents to attend upcoming information sessions regarding the expanded use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems equipped with automated license plate recognition (ALPR) technology.

These systems will be strategically deployed in public areas across Waterloo Region to enhance community safety, support crime prevention, strengthen investigative capabilities, and enable a more coordinated and timely police response.

When a crime or major incident occurs, investigators can review CCTV footage and associated data to collect valuable evidence or situational awareness. ALPR software automatically scans license plates and alerts officers of stolen vehicles, vehicles linked to violent criminal offences, wanted persons, or missing vulnerable people. Access to any footage or associated data will be strictly governed and permitted only when officers have established reasonable grounds in accordance with legal requirements.

Camera locations will be determined through statistical analysis conducted by the WRPS Crime Analysis Unit. A complete list of deployment sites will be made publicly available on the WRPS website prior to the project launch.
