WRPS Launches Ninth Annual Backpack Challenge to Support Local Students
The Waterloo Regional Police Service is once again challenging the community to take part in its ninth annual Backpack Challenge.
The Backpack Challenge encourages businesses and residents to purchase new backpacks, lunch bags, school supplies, or gift cards to be donated to children and families in need throughout Waterloo Region.
Over the past eight years, the Backpack Challenge has collected more than 28,000 backpacks, along with thousands of dollars in gift cards and school supplies. Last year alone, donations were distributed directly to families and through more than 25 child and youth-serving organizations across Waterloo Region, helping local students start the school year confident and ready to learn.
“The success of the Backpack Challenge is made possible by the incredible generosity of residents, businesses, and community partners,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police. “Together, we can help ensure students across Waterloo Region are ready for a positive start to the school year this Fall.”
The Backpack Challenge runs until August 17, 2026. All donations will be delivered to community organizations throughout Waterloo Region in the following weeks.
Donations can be dropped off at any WRPS division:
• Headquarters, 200 Maple Grove Road, Cambridge
• North Division, 45 Columbia Street East, Waterloo
• Central Division, 200 Frederick Street, Kitchener
• South Division, 176 Hespeler Road, Cambridge
More information about registering to receive a backpack will be available in early August.
