Waterloo Regional Police are reminding the public to stay vigilant following a distraction theft in Kitchener.

On July 23, 2026, at approximately 11:40 a.m., unknown suspects were travelling in a black Volkswagen on Newbury Drive. The driver conducted a U-turn and stopped on the roadway in front of a residence. The vehicle was occupied by a male driver and a female passenger seated in the rear. 

The suspects exited the vehicle and asked a passerby for directions to a nearby Portuguese grocery store. The witness was unable to assist, and the victim subsequently approached the vehicle to provide directions. During the conversation, the female suspect offered the victim a gift as a token of appreciation for their assistance. The female suspect then placed her arms around the victims and put a gold-coloured chain around the victim’s neck while also giving them a gold-coloured ring.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., following the interaction, the driver abruptly reversed on Newbury Drive before fleeing at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then turned onto Rolling Meadows Drive and was last seen travelling toward Westheights Drive. 

During the interaction, the victim became distracted, at which time their own gold necklace was removed and replaced with the items provided by the suspects. The victim did not sustain any physical injuries. 

Investigators are looking to identify and speak to the owner and occupants of the vehicle in the photos below.

The investigation remains ongoing by WRPS' General Investigations Unit.

Public Safety Reminder

Waterloo Regional Police have received numerous reports of distraction thefts throughout the region. These incidents occur when suspects deliberately distract victims in order to steal valuables, often within a matter of seconds and without the victim realizing the theft has occurred until after the suspects have left.  

Suspects often work in pairs or groups, with one person engaging the victim while another commits the theft. Common tactics include asking for directions, offering assistance or unsolicited gifts such as jewellery, and engaging in overly friendly conversation while invading personal space. These incidents commonly occur in parking lots, shopping areas, and residential neighbourhoods.

While anyone can be targeted, suspects often focus on individuals who are:

• Alone
• Distracted
• Wearing visible valuables
• Older adults

Members of the public are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, keep personal belongings secure, and avoid allowing strangers into their personal space or accepting unsolicited items. If something feels suspicious, leave the area immediately.

If you believe you have been targeted or victimized, move to a safe location and contact police right away. Do not confront the suspect and, if possible, provide a description of the individual(s) and any associated vehicle.

Distraction thefts rely on catching people off guard. Remaining alert and cautious is the best way to prevent becoming a victim.
