The Waterloo Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate a sudden death.

On July 4, 2026, members of WRPS’ General Investigations Unit began an investigation into the death of an adult male from Waterloo Region.

Through the investigation, it was determined that the deceased had arranged to participate in a private ibogaine healing experience. During the ceremony, the deceased consumed ibogaine, a psychoactive alkaloid extract from the root bark of a Central West African rain forest shrub. Ibogaine is not authorized for use in Canada and is not an approved medical treatment recognized by Health Canada.

On July 30, 2026, investigators completed a search warrant at a residence in Mississauga and seized suspected ibogaine, along with several other powders, liquids, and capsules. The seized items were submitted to Health Canada for analysis and identification.

As a result of the investigation, Luis Da Silva, a 57-year-old Mississauga male, was arrested and charged with:

• Criminal Negligence Causing Death
• Selling a Prescription Drug Recklessly

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is urging the public to be aware of the dangers associated with ibogaine use, which can cause side effects such as nausea and vomiting and may lead to serious injury or death.
