Waterloo Regional Police have arrested two individuals after responding to a report of a possible theft in progress in North Dumfries.

On August 22, 2026, at approximately 6 a.m., police responded to a report of a possible theft in progress on Branchton Road near Morrison Road.

Officers arrived and located two individuals near a quantity of wire that had been cut from between two telephone poles. Both individuals were arrested.

As a result of the investigation, a 29-year-old male and a 29-year-old female, both from Cambridge, were charged with:

• Theft Over $5,000
• Mischief Over $5,000

Police are encouraging businesses and site operators to take proactive steps to help prevent theft, including: 

• Securing materials in locked buildings, containers, or fenced compounds
• Storing valuable items out of public view whenever possible
• Posting clearly visible No Trespassing signs
• Installing and maintaining video surveillance systems
• Ensuring storage areas and access points are well lit
• Restricting site access and regularly inspecting gates, locks, and other security measures
• Marking materials, where appropriate, and conducting routine inventory checks

Timely reporting is critical. Police urge the public and business owners to report suspicious activity and thefts as soon as possible, as witness information and surveillance footage can play a key role in advancing investigation and supporting enforcement efforts.
